KA Tucker has a Big Announcement!

Fans of K.A. Tucker’s Ten Tiny Breaths, we have a SUPER exciting announcement:

On September 1, 2014, Atria is releasing a PREQUEL NOVELLA to Ten Tiny Breaths that tells the story from Trent’s point of view! It’s called IN HER WAKE, and we cannot wait one more breath to read it!

In Her Wake

Cole Reynolds had it all. And then one night he makes a bad choice… and loses everything.

When a drunken night out at a Michigan State college party results in the death of six people, Cole must come to terms with his part in the tragedy. Normally, he’d be able to lean on his best friends. The best friends that have been in his life since he could barely walk. Only, they’re gone. Worse, there’s the shattered body of a sixteen-year-old girl lying somewhere in a hospital bed, her entire life ripped from her because of a case of beer and a set of keys.

Everyone assures him that they know it wasn’t intentional and yet he can’t ignore the weight of their gazes, the whispers behind his back. The all-consuming guilt he feels every time he thinks of that girl who won’t so much as allow him near her hospital room to apologize. As the months go by and the shame and loneliness festers, Cole begins to lose his grip of what once was important-college, his girlfriend, his future. His life. It’s not until Cole hits rock-bottom that he can begin to see another way out of his personal hell: forgiveness.

And there’s only one person who can give that to him…

Are you as excited about this as we are??

Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine year old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.

Twenty-two-year old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting anddancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her doesn’t need to complicate her life with romance.

Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.

The Following…I can’t get enough of Kevin Bacon or all the crazies!

Well, if you haven’t watched The Following, you are missing out!  I usually don’t do shows, books, movies, really anything that involves crazy psychos and is liable to get my heart racing.  Well, I caved and started watching The Following last  year.  Mostly, if I am honest, because I love Kevin Bacon.  Yes, the Kevin Bacon from Footloose and Flatliners.  For me, he is scruffy hot and let’s be honest, he rocked the 80s tux in Footloose.  Love the guy.  And he is center stage in The Following.  He plays former FBI agent Ryan Hardy.  I don’t really want to give too much away but let’s say, his past has caught up to him big time in the form of an absolute narcissistic, psychopath Joe Carroll.  The psychopath and his “followers” are just “wow”.  There are not words.  They truly believe in Joe and his teachings.  Ryan Hardy is enemy #1 for them and Joe although in prison is plotting and scheming.  Clearly, Joe doesn’t stay in prison for long and his cult following quickly leaves a mark on civilized society.  Funny enough, I thought the first season couldn’t be outdone with season 2 but the writers have coughed up even more crazies.  John and I can’t get enough of this show.  It makes my Mondays tolerable!  Drinking is advised while watching this show (click on the pic above).  It gives me anxiety (in a good way of course)!

Tomato& Goat Cheese Tarts…

For those of you who know me, you know I love to cook.  For those of you who don’t know me, that doesn’t mean I am a chef.  I am very competent at following a recipe and absolutely love the whole process of making a meal.  Caveat:  I do not bake.  I cook.  This recipe is exceptional and is found in one of my favorite cookbooks of all times….Barefoot Contessa, Back to Basics.  I have dog eared so many recipes in this one book.  I say if you don’t have it, buy it.

Tomato and Goat Cheese Tarts has a few steps and I am not going to lie, it takes a bit of time; however, the results are so worth it.  It is a great option for a vegetarian dinner as well and I have a few vegetarians in my friend group. So let’s begin….I even have pics!

IMG_3842First thing, preheat oven to 425.  If you are unfamiliar with puff pastry, acquaint yourself with it.  It is a fantastic ingredient.  For this recipe, just unfold a puff pastry sheet on a floured surface (don’t forget to flour your roller) and roll it lightly into an 11×11 square.  Now, that is the instructions from Ina Garten. I just rolled it out.  I’m not really a measurer.  I use one of my cup saucers and cut out two circles from each sheet. Then I take a knife out and score around each circle leaving an 1/4 inch border.  Take a fork and prick the center and sprinkle on some parmesan.

IMG_3843Then you are going to cut 2 large onions into slices and sauté them for about 20 minutes or so.  Throw in 3 slivered cloves of garlic.  When there is hardly any moisture, add the wine, thyme, salt and pepper.  Cook another 10 minutes and remove remove from heat.

Place 1/4 of the onion mixture on each circle, again staying within the scored edge. Crumble 1 ounce of goat cheese on top of the onions. Place a slice of tomato in the center of each tart. Brush the tomato lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with basil, salt, and pepper. Finally, scatter 4 or 5 shards of Parmesan on each tart.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown. The bottom sheet pan may need an extra few minutes in the oven. Serve hot or warm.

IMG_3846 IMG_3848 IMG_3849 IMG_3850

Here is a good set of pics to show you the final steps!  This is really tasty and especially if it is still warm.  I am thinking about making this for a bridal shower but in mini appetizer size!  I will post pics if I do!

The Proposition Part 2 by HM Ward…I’m intrigued

The Proposition 2: The Ferro Family (The Proposition, #2)The Proposition 2: The Ferro Family by H.M. Ward

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, we know that Hallie has agreed to Bryan’s proposition at the end of Book 1. The question is where is this going to go from here for the next 4 installments! Bryan’s reason for blackmailing Hallie still remains a mystery. Why is he so pissed? When are we going to get the answers to what happened between them?! They both clearly still care for each other but can’t seem to figure out what to do with it or how to talk about it.

These are all the things that happen in Part 2:
1. We meet Maggie, Hallie’s best friend. I already love her. She is going to be a kick ass best friend.
2. Hallie witnesses a murder.
3. Hallie gets attacked.
4. Something is wrong with Brian since he has a pharmacy in his bathroom.
5. I want to murder Neil. He deserves the worst that HM Ward can write.
6. We get to see Trystan Scott and Jon Ferro and let’s be honest…I adore them both from their own series.

I can only imagine what is going to happen next. Bring Part 3 on!

The Proposition by HM Ward…she does it again!

The Proposition: The Ferro Family (The Proposition, #1)The Proposition: The Ferro Family by H.M. Ward

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love when authors build a world that you want to get lost in and especially when the characters are deliciously addictive! The Proposition is book number 1 in the new Proposition series and it follows Hallie, a young girl with a complicated past and and Bryan Ferro, who is cousin to the hot Ferro brothers. You are immediately thrown into Hallie’s story. She is battling a pretty deep depression. Her father who was her biggest supporter and lifeline, has died and left her with not only a deep whole in her heart but a mountain of bills. Her boyfriend Neil is the only lifeline she seems to have and he is constantly trying to help pull her out of her depression. In an effort to cleanse her heart and her mind, she stays attached to her computer writing about her past and a long lost love. The story is very graphic and erotic and she decides to publish it on the internet. The unthinkable happens and people are clamoring for the story. She tells everyone including Neil that it is a work of fiction but clearly it is not and the love story includes Bryan Ferro.

We are of course left with a bit of a cliffhanger which is expected since this is a serial. I am hooked already. Love Hallie. Hallie is going to be a fantastic heroine She’s sharp, balanced and tough even though her heart has been broken and she has stumbled a bit after her dad’s death. Bryan is going to be another stunning Ferro. He will not go unnoticed. He is incredibly hot, sexy and clearly has a dark side.

The Secret Life of Trystan Scott by HM Ward

The Secret Life of Trystan Scott CollectionThe Secret Life of Trystan Scott Collection by H.M. Ward

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am not going to try to hide how much I enjoy HM Ward and all of her books! If I ever had the chance to meet her, I might scream like a crazy Justin Bieber fan…and yes, I am a grown woman. The small pieces we get of Trystan Scott in Stripped enticed me to want more of his story and we are provided just that in these five books rolled into one collection.

These books are set in high school which changes the writing style for Holly. The innocence and sweetness of Trystan and Mari is enjoyable. When it comes to each other, they clearly both want more from each other but can’t seem to tell each other. Which I would say is typical for this age and it was nice to remember how much “love” could throw you off axis in high school. Trystan and Mari are clearly best friends as they spend a huge amount of time together. Trystan seems to be having a more difficult time handling his feelings so he decides to post a video of a song he sings for Mari. It goes viral and everyone wants to know who the singer is. Mari soon finds out that Trystan is the singer and is intrigued who the girl could possibly be.

Although Mari and Trystan are from different sides of the tracks, they both suffer at home. Trystan has a father who blames him for his mother leaving, beats him and starves him. It broke my heart reading through the tense times when Trystan goes home. Mari is from a much wealthier family but is treated as a nuisance and an inconvenience by her parents. Her father is verbally cruel and her mother ignores her. Both situations are hard to digest as you read along especially if you are a parent yourself.

I have to mention how much I love Mr. Tucker, an English teacher and head of the theatre/drama department. He is constantly on Trystan to make good decisions and stop out of trouble and he seems to be watching over him like a guardian angel. He clearly sees potential in Trystan and doesn’t want it to be wasted.  Teachers like Mr. Tucker are so important during these critical years of high school and hopefully everyone has a teacher that Mr. Tucker reminds you of from your days in high school. His guidance and advice are invaluable to Trystan and Mari and he saves both of their necks throughout the story.

The ending to the book isn’t really a cliffhanger but I felt robbed of my happily ever after. Although that isn’t really true, you wanted an epilogue that showed how Trystan and Mari managed after high school. Of course, HM Ward is going to provide something even better for her readers: a book about Trystan and Mari as adults.  Based off what we have seen of both Mari and Trystan in the other Ferro books, I can only imagine what has happened since the ending of this collection. They clearly went on separate paths and from the little we have seen of Trystan, he hasn’t found the one.  Could he still be in love with Mari, the first girl he ever loved.  I will be waiting patiently…or at least as patiently as I can wait to find out!  Fangirl scream!

Cover Reveal for Katy Evan’s Rogue

If you haven’t had the chance to pick up one of Katy Evan’s books, now is the chance to get caught up!  The series includes REAL, MINE and REMY and feature Remington Tate, an underground fighter.  I really enjoyed all these books and was sad to see the story between Remy and Brooke end.

Thank goodness, Katy Evans decided to write a fourth story featuring Brooke’s best friend, Melanie, and the rogue she can’t resist.  Check out the synopsis and cover below!

Greyson King…
My boyfriend. My friend. My protector. He’s the reason I wake up every morning with a smile on my face, and the reason I fall asleep limp, worn out, and aching for his warm arms around me. When we make love, he says my name like it means something. Like I mean something.

He Lied.

His name is Greyson King, but his alias is Zero.

There’s zero trace of him, he has zero past, and now I know that with him, I will have zero future.

He may leave no trace of him anywhere, but his imprint is in me, in my very soul—and I hate that a mere look at him commands the beat of my heart. The temperature of my body.

I’ve looked for love my entire life. I’ve waited for the butterflies, the rainbows…

Instead I’m in a free fall of emotions and there’s no one to catch me but the one man I should be running away from. The one man I thought was my prince charming.

Except this prince charming went rogue.

Greyson will stop at nothing to make me be with him. He’ll let no one stand in our way, will allow no one to threaten me, and maybe this is what scares me most of all…

What will my rogue do to keep me?

6997072KATY BIO:
Katy Evans grew up with books and book-boyfriends until she found a real sexy boyfriend to love, married him, and now they are hard at work on their own happily ever after. Katy loves her family and friends, and she also loves reading, walking, baking, and being consumed by her characters until she reaches “The End.” Which is, hopefully, only the beginning…

John Talk – First Post

So I have a number of postings in mind, from the relatively mundane (but excitement laden to me) to universal topics of interests that all likely won’t agree with (Greatest Movie = Die Hard; Greatest Song = Def Leppard’s Photograph) that I want (hope) to eventually get to over time, but I suppose I should start with me.

I am Candace’s husband of over 8 years though we have known each other for over 14 years now.  The best way to describe me is relatively simple.  I am complex in my mind, simple in my day-to-day actions, mindful of my shortcomings (in which I have lots), and, most importantly, content with who I am most of the time.

What’s the basics? I am an attorney.  Yeah, living in DC and you’re an attorney?  Original.  But at least I am a technical attorney and not your run of the mill one.  I received a BS from Clemson University in Electrical Engineering and soon realized that a cubicle was not for me.  Patent law was the answer and thus that is what I do today.  I work hard but also am glad to know that I work to live and not live to work.  I love my job, like the people I work with, but prefer family and the time at home with them.

I am also almost 40!  Though I act like it in some respects, I really don’t in most.  At least I’ll get to celebrate turning 40 in style when Candace and I head to New Orleans to walk the street, hit the jazz clubs, eat to our heart’s content, and, oh yeah, drink just a little.  The drink of choice, the Old Fashioned (post to follow).

So what else would one say?  Maybe those things that let you really know someone.  I can sing, no, I can belt out Whitney Houston or Shania Twain in full confidence; I can make myself laugh in my head; and I have an extremely healthy infatuation with James Bond.  I am not him, I know that I will never be him, but I love the character.

So please read my posts for the urban guy’s how-tos at times, thoughts on topics that should be discussed with friends (the aforementioned best movies, best songs, best back-to-back songs for a wedding reception, etc.), and  how to be 40 with two kids, a full time job, a wife with never ending energy (or ideas), and free time that tends to last at least 30 minutes a day (not counting sleeping).  I’ll be short, sweet, and to the point and hopefully funny at times.

And so, in the words at the ends of every James Bond film:

John Fleming will return.

Ever Need An Outlet?

I decided maybe I should explain why I decided to start this blog or at least go into a bit more detail since I have had quite a few people ask me. What’s up with all the book reviews and book info? Why are you blogging? Well, there is a simple answer. I need an outlet.

For anyone that knows me well, they know I do better with a ton on my plate and I am not a happy camper when I am not busy. Giving birth to two rowdy little boys has been a huge challenge and it kept me pretty darn busy for the last couple of years. But as any mom can tell you, sometimes raising your kids doesn’t quite hit the spot, so to speak. Now, please don’t read into this too much. I love my kids. I love being their mom. But somewhere in the midst of all the late nights, bottles, potty training, kid activities, I felt myself disappear a bit. I think this is totally normal and I know from talking to my friends, everyone feels this way. It is hard not to lose yourself in the course of raising children. We are tasked with the challenge of turning these small people into good human beings. It is a huge responsibility and sometimes the weight of it can crush us.

So….to give me a place to go and just take a bit of time for myself, I decided to blog. I have always enjoyed reading and writing and this seemed to be a natural fit for me. I spend a good deal of time on the internet looking at and reading blogs that cover everything from DIY, parenting, reading, and cooking. I love stumbling across a post that helps me in my everyday life whether with a recipe, a home improvement tip, an activity with my kids and of course, I can always use another good book to read. I can read book blogs all day long.

As I start my adventure on this blog, I am going to post whatever hits me at the moment. I am going to share a little of myself and send it out into the cyber universe. Yes, you will see a ton of posts on books because let’s be honest, I read like a mad woman. But you will also see a little bit of our life in DC. I hope you enjoy it because I sure know I will because each post I write on this blog means I took a little time to reflect on my life and what brings me happiness and pleasure! So here goes nothing…

Cover Reveals for Jay Crownover’s Better When He’s Bad….this is one of my must reads for 2014!

If I ever get to meet Jay Crownover, I will definitely have a fangirl moment with her.  I don’t just enjoy her books, I read each of them a few times.  I even go back and look at some of my favorite parts again and again.  Her books are some of the first that I recommend to people when asked what they should read. Rule, Jet, Rome and Nash (in April) are tremendously fun bad boys and their stories have permanently etched into my mind.  I can only imagine what Bax is going to be like….

Image Map

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

About the Author

I’m supposed to share interesting details about myself so that my readers get to know me so here we go in no particular order: I’m an natural redhead even though I haven’t seen my real hair color in years, I’m a big fan of tattoos and have a half sleeve on either arm and various other pieces all over the place, I’ve been in the bar industry since I was in college and it has always offered interesting insight into how men and women interact with each other, I have 3 dogs that are all crazy, I live in Colorado and love the snow, I love music and in all reality wish I could be a rock star not a writer or a bartender but I have zero talent so there is that.

I love to write, love to read and all I’m interested in is a good story with interesting characters that make the reader feel something.
