Book Review: Provoke by Missy Johnson…unexpected plot twist

ProvokeProvoke by Missy Johnson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was definitely a 4 1/2 stars!

This book made me rapidly blink numerous times. I couldn’t believe the twist the story took. It was so unexpected. I read the teasers and was curious. I contacted Missy and she sent me a copy. I was delighted! Lately, I have been venturing into some books with darker story lines and this one fit the bill.

Provoke starts off fast with Mace and Leeta who seem to be in a solid relationship that is both loving and nurturing. Leeta is a prosecutor and seems to be the consummate good girl. The only time she has deviated from the straight and narrow is Mace. Mace is the son of famous (and behind bars) gangland killer. His brother is also in prison for various crimes. Mace seems relatively clean and on the right side of the law. He owns a repair shop and seems to love Leeta with his whole heart. Their chemistry is through the roof and you enjoying reading their scenes. The worst part is you are inevitably waiting for the ball to drop because you know the happily ever after can’t start so early in the book.

When Leeta discovers Mace’s huge secret, it is mind blowing. You are left speechless. I was so torn up and couldn’t decide whether to love or hate Mace. The reader will totally empathize with Leeta. I didn’t see the plot twist coming. I can usually smell them a mile away but not this time. Well done, Missy! A quote from Mace sums it up:

This was so much bigger than her and me, and I wasn’t going to apologise for that. The thought of hurting her in any way tore me up inside, but I wasn’t going to back down on this.

The situation is messy and I was glad to have both Leeta and Mace’s POV. The book wouldn’t have worked without both. I felt horrible for Mace because he clearly isn’t a bad guy but he has a very screwed up family and his secret is killing him. He never wanted to lie to Leeta but he was trying to do the right thing.

The book is not very long but still is extremely fast paced. I stayed up really late and read it in one day which I need to stop doing but the storyline just grabbed me. I really wish it had been longer and quite honestly, I am hoping that she is going to write Cash (Mace’s brother) story. Read this book, dark storyline with some steamy romance.
