WHDK cover FINAL_1

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

The house was once magical, filled with love and joy and plans for the future.

Inside its walls are many things that belong to me — my books, the china from my mother on my wedding day, the beautiful cage once home to two birds, now empty, just like me.

And a man.

A man who also belongs to me.

A man I no longer wish to keep.

A man who, no doubt, has not slept, though the sun is rising. Because the house where he waits is where I laid my head to rest every night for eight years. Until last night.

No one who knows me would believe Charlie Pierce, the quiet, bookish girl who never made waves is pulling out of the driveway of a man who isn’t her husband.

But they don’t know me at all.

I don’t even know me.

Not anymore.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I live inside of? It has three.

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

But there is no longer a home.

MY REVIEW

First of all, let me say, that I haven’t read Kandi Steiner before. Big mistake. Big. If all of her books are like What He Doesn’t Know, I have truly been missing out. I will know where to go when I need an angsty love story. The emotions in this book are off the chart and these characters had my head spinning. Alot of readers don’t like love triangles. I personally love them and I really enjoy them when they are well written and you aren’t quite sure who should be with who. Kandi Steiner nailed the troupe and you almost don’t even think of it as a love triangle but just as a story of people falling in and out of love.

Charlie is a character that you can’t help but feel for because most of us have either been there or no someone that has in a marriage. Marriages require work…lots of work and when a tragedy happens, it usually either makes or breaks the relationship. Unfortunately for Charlie, she is in an awful middle ground…limbo. Cameron clearly loves her but he is broken as well not only over their shared tragedy but by his past and his own mistakes. Sometimes it all piles up and it is hard to see clear and just love the person again.

Reese is back after an extended time away from home. He is also searching for something….family…connection….and Charlie was always it for him. He knows she is married but he just sees the girl he fall in love with a long time ago….broken and a shell of herself.

The dance these three do around each other is heartbreaking and so well written that you fly through the pages. I literally went for pages without breathing and when I finally did, my heart ached for these characters. The ending took my breath away and I am dying to know what will happen in the next book.

Thanks, Kandi Steiner for engulfing me with this story. I’m sorry I haven’t read your other books but I promise to remedy it quickly. This is an epic read and one of my favorites for 2018 so far.Now Available Horizontal

About the Author:

Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.

Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).

When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.

Book Release and Review: Written in the Scars by Adriana Locke

There aren’t enough words to tell you how much I loved this book.  I had to keep looking away from the pages as I read it because every single word gutted me.  This is a beautiful story of fighting for love, believing in love and realizing that love is something shared amongst many.  You may even learn a little something about yourself…I sure did.  Don’t miss this book….go grab it and dive in…your heart will thank you.

Falling in love is easy.Falling out of love is the hardest thing in the world.

And Elin and Ty Whitt are terrible at it.

The first time the local basketball star smiled at Elin, she was a goner. It was just so damn easy to fall for the dark-haired hometown hero with his charming smile and strong, athletic build.

Thousands of sleepy smiles, aimless drives down country roads, and squeaks of the backdoor after a swing shift later, reality hits. And it hits hard. Falling in love was definitely the easy part. Watching it break apart was impossible.

Through the tears, the second-guesses, the memories of a life built together, the world keeps spinning. With each turn comes clarity and hope—sometimes in the form of a pair of muddy boots by the back door or from the words of a wise friend.

When Ty shows back up with a new found determination to put his family back together, Elin’s torn between the fights of the past and the possibility of a new start. This is the man that holds her heart, the man she loves beyond anything else. But this is also the one person in the world that can cause her the most pain.

Life’s not always easy. Love’s not for the faint of heart. But with life comes lessons and Ty and Elin have the scars to prove it. But it’s their love written in those scars that will hold them together … or break them apart.

MY REVIEW
I knew I was in for a ride with Written in the Scars in the opening chapter. My heart was thumping, my throat was closing off and I kept reading. The pain and angst radiated off the pages and caused me to take a moment and think about my own life. This book makes you step back and look at your own relationship and examine all the little things/the little jabs and digs you may do or say that you think are insignificant but over the long haul can be so destructive and detrimental. This story makes you want to try to do a better job at being a partner, a friend, even just a member of your community. To take a moment to realize that you may not be the only one suffering in silence. To work harder. To love more.

After reading this book, you just want to be more…more understanding, more communicative, more courageous, and more loving than you can ever imagine to stay married/be in a relationship. You have to put your fears aside and be honest even when it hurts. Elin and Ty could be any of us. And that is why this book needs to be read.

This story is beautifully written and the words jump off the page. Adriana creates a poignant tale that all of us can relate to and she sets it in a small town that many of us have lived in at one time or another or maybe all of our lives. The friendships that are shared here are for a lifetime and you love the secondary characters as much as Elin and Ty.

To say that I cried a few tears is a true understatement. This book pulled at my heart strings and played with my mind. It is a true rarity that you walk away with a book feeling like you may have learned a little something about yourself and life in general. Written in the Scars is what loving someone for the long haul looks like.

Excerpt

I pull her into me, trying to put her, me, our life back together with my embrace. Her arms find my waist, and I hold her in the middle of the driveway, swaying back and forth in a moment I’ll never, ever forget. The feeling of my world careening back into focus, into the places it should be, nearly drops me to my knees with my girl in my arms.“I should go in,” she says, looking up at me.

“It’s cold in there.”

She shrugs and I see her start to slip away from me again. Frantic, I struggle to find a way to stop it.

“Let’s go for a drive,” I suggest.

She looks at me warily.

“It’s just a drive,” I promise. “The house can warm up and then I’ll drop you back off, if that’s what you want. What can it hurt?”

“You won’t try to make out with me or anything, right?” she teases. “Because I know that look in your eye, Tyler Whitt.”

“Only if you ask,” I wink, opening the door to my truck and watching her climb in. Before I shut it, I lean in and whisper into her ear. “Hey, E.”

“Yeah?”

“Please ask.”
