Book Release and Review: Sleeper by Lexi Blake

When Neil’s past catches up to him, Kelsey must choose between her new family and an old love…

With tensions rising between the Council and demonkind, Kelsey finds herself investigating a series of murders that threaten the fragile truce between them. If she can’t stop these killings soon, they could ignite a fire sure to burn the supernatural world down.

Unfortunately for her, Kelsey’s problems don’t stop with a pile of dead halflings. Her connection with Marcus is frayed at best, and Gray hasn’t been heard from in months. Her only semblance of peace comes from a new man in her life. When Gray storms back into the picture, her love life goes from incredibly complicated to apocalyptic.

Just as Kelsey begins to unravel the mystery, the forces of Heaven decide to take an interest in her actions. Outclassed with these powers in play, Kelsey knows that one misstep could leave the human and supernatural worlds in ashes.

EXCERPT

“Your Highness, please back away. In fact, it would be best if you left the room altogether.” Felix put himself between me and Roberts. “Kelsey, I need you to push her down. Push her back down for a few moments. Marcus will be back soon and he’s going to take care of you. Being around those angels unsettled you. I don’t know if you noticed, but at the end of the meeting, your ward fell off. You didn’t have it on when Oliver shook your hand. He’s unbalanced and now you are, too. It’s like a contagion for someone like you. Oliver’s illness has called up your inner wolf and she’s angry.”

“Perhaps if I touch her,” Henri began. “I’m an academic. I don’t have the same connection she has with Marcus, but I might be able to help.”

“I’m not unbalanced.” It didn’t matter that my hands were shaking and they had been ever since I’d left the angels behind. “I’m going to talk to the wolf whether you like it or not. He’s been handling silver. It’s the only reason his hands wouldn’t have healed. Even then, a couple of hours would have done it. Unless the freaking silver he held came straight from Heaven. What about it, Roberts? How did you spend last night?”

The wolf was shaking his head. “I don’t know.”

That wasn’t an answer I was willing to accept. I was about to explain that to everyone when Chad stepped up and got in my face.

“I’m taking him out of here now,” Chad explained. “You’ll let me or we’re going to have trouble.”

I was ready for trouble. I was fairly sure I grinned, the idea of fighting a vamp lifting my spirits high. For the first time in what felt like hours, I went still. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Chad turned, his shoulders squaring, and I felt the world begin to bend around me. Chad belongs to one of the rarest classes of vampire—the magicians. As far as I knew, he was the only one walking the night at this time. He could form illusions so real you could taste food, feel imaginary rain on your skin, utterly believe whatever he wanted you to believe. I’d come up against him before. I might be one of the only people in the world who could see through him.

“It won’t work,” I said calmly as reality seemed to go dark and I heard the hissing of snakes all around me. “Do you not remember what happened the last time you pulled this shit on me? It took three tranqs to take me down. I don’t think you have those on you today.”

“I won’t need them.” Chad lifted his hand and the world shifted.

“Holy shit,” Casey said, climbing up on his desk. “What the fuck is happening?”

Snakes were happening. They were crawling from the woodwork, twitching and hissing my way. The fibers of the carpet beneath my feet lengthened and formed more snakes until they were a menacing mass, threatening everyone in the room.

Well, except for Chad, who had lifted his husband into his arms and prepared to take him away.

I let my wolf loose a bit. She knew this was all an illusion. That primitive part of my brain that Chad was accessing, the lizard brain that merely wanted to survive, was taken over by the wolf inside me. The alpha wolf didn’t want mere survival. She wanted to dominate, and that meant seeing past fear, trusting her instincts over what her eyes perceived.

The minute I opened the door, I felt her surge through me.

“I’m not letting you go. I can’t. I’m conducting a murder investigation, and I believe your boy here just became my prime suspect.” My hands twitched, eager for a fight, and I realized how long it had been since Marcus and I had thrown down.

Too long. Remember that whole thing about needing sex or violence to feed my inner wolf? Well, she was hungry and there was a whole lot of violence in Chad’s eyes.

I welcomed it. I could feel the need rise like a wave threatening to engulf me. This was why I had a trainer in the first place.

I gritted my teeth because Chad turned on his power. I could feel those fucking snakes climbing my legs and sinking their fangs into me. I refused to pay any attention to them despite the fact that I ached to rip the fuckers off me and toss them aside. To do that would have given the magician more power. If I bought into it, if I took my eyes off the only thing in the room that was real, I would end up like Casey, who was screaming like a girl.

“Let me pass, Hunter,” Chad said.

I stood my ground like the good Gandalf I was. Except I kind of wanted to shove my nonexistent staff right up old Chad’s ass, and then we would see if he sent snakes my way again.

The anger rose, rapid and quick, a flash fire coursing through me. I didn’t even realize when I had reached for the fireplace poker. All I knew was it was suddenly in my hands and I was going to use it. I could see myself shoving that piece of wrought iron right through his heart. It wouldn’t kill him. I would need wood for that, but then again, I didn’t want the fight over so quickly.

I raised the poker, ready to start.

“Stop it, both of you.” Donovan stepped in between us, but I didn’t care at that moment. I hadn’t felt this way in forever, not since Marcus had taken me in. I hadn’t been so out of control that I didn’t care who I hurt as long as I got to hurt someone. I would fuck up Donovan, too. All that mattered was seeing blood, feeling bones crush.

“You see, I told you she’s far gone and I can’t fix her anymore. I’ve called Gray and he has an idea of what to do,” Marcus was saying.

I wasn’t listening.

I started to bring the poker down Donovan’s way, but I was stopped in mid swing. A hand held my wrist, an arm going around my middle and hauling me back against muscled flesh.

“Stop it,” Trent growled in my ear. “You stand down right this second.”

MY REVIEW

I am a huge fan of Lexi Blake and her paranormal books.  The Thieves series is hands down on of my favorite.  Sleeper is the best book of Hunter series.  Kelsey really comes into her own. She seems to find her groove and gets her place in the world. She is comfortable with who she is and what her purpose is for everyone involved. I really began to love her character. She has grown so much since book 1. Kelsey is a true badass and she never stops fighting for what she believes is right.  She has a tight group of friends and family that she is beginning to rely on and love.

You really can’t talk about the plot without giving out away too much. But I’ll tell you holy hell this book was rolling along way too fast.  There were a million storylines going and every single one of them was fantastic.  Zoey and Lee.  Those two names resonate throughout this book in the best ways.  Trent and Grey were both everything I wanted them to be in this book and Kelsey’s interaction with both was some of my favorite moments.  There is so much more story to tell in this series and storylines to finish up.  I can’t imagine where Lexi is going to take Kelsey and the crew.  I definitely recommend Sleeper but make sure to read the entire Thieves series to really immerse yourself in this world.

EXCERPT

Time was a wily beast.

It stole. It destroyed. It healed.

Constant and immovable.

And each day brought a new morning.

Time was dependable. And only time could move the world forward.

Time had slipped away from Cyrene. It was a thief in the night, scrubbing away the hours and leaving her disoriented.

At first, all she could feel was the soft bed beneath her body. For a moment, she thought of Dean. Lying against his chest, waking in the morning with his arms wrapped tightly around her, knowing that another night had passed. Another night closer to their wedding.

Then, another second ticked by, and that memory stabbed her in the chest. There would never be another morning like that. There would never be another dawn with Dean. There would never be another moment in Eleysia. For she was bound to Byern. And always would be.

Her eyes flew open, and she scrambled across the bed in horror. Her hand touched her mouth…and Kael Dremylon’s eyes slowly opened with a lazy smile on his pretty face.

“Morning,” he said, biting back a yawn.

“What in the Creator’s name are you doing in my bed?” she all but shrieked.

“Sleeping.”

“How dare you come into my quarters and share my bed with me! Do you think I have no honor? Do you think I have forgotten what you tried to do to me?”

She had woken up curled around Kael! Her leg wrapped around his. Her arm flung across his bare chest. His arms cradling her, as if he even knew what comfort was.

Now, he was staring at her as if she had gone completely insane. How could he possibly think this was okay?

“Do you know where we are?” Kael asked.

He sat up and leaned on one elbow. The sheet slipped off his body, revealing every rippling muscle. She snapped her gaze back up to his face.

“I don’t see how that matters.”

“We are on a Byern warship. This is the only room on the ship with quarters this nice. Otherwise, you can sleep below decks with the crew. Is that what you want?”

She shook her head. “Surely, there must be somewhere else. I can’t be expected to sleep here. What will everyone think?”

He laughed a bitter, rough laugh. “Now, you are concerned about this?”

“If I am to be carted back to Byern, then I should have the luxuries of an Affiliate.”

He held his hand out. “And you are afforded those luxuries.”

Cyrene opened her mouth to argue, but he cut her off.

“This is a war vessel, not a pleasure ship. We are not on procession, like the last time you had the full attention of Byern royalty in your bed,” he said viciously. “If you do not sleep with me, in my rooms, then you sleep below decks. With the crew.”

Cyrene glowered at him. Of course, he would use every advantage that he had while he had her here. And, even though she had never slept with King Edric, it still prickled her to think that everyone, including Kael, believed that she had. But, if it irritated him to consider it, then she wouldn’t contradict him.

“So, you expect me to sleep next to you the entire time I am trapped here?”

“Yes,” he said simply. “Now, if you want to roll back over and lie on me again, I won’t object.”

MY REVIEW

For any of you who know me, you know that my true love in the book world is fantasy or high fantasy.  KA Linde follows in the same vein of Sarah J. Maas as she creates a world in the Ascension books that you can just get lost in.  I’m a true fantasy super geek and I love the map and all the details of the world that Cyrene travels through the entire series.  After I finished the Bound, my mind couldn’t stop thinking about where the story was going to go.  KA Linde combines fantasy and suspense and keeps the pages turning.  There was so much going on in this book that it was hard to process without stopping and really sitting and thinking about who, what, when and where.  Cyrene is literally developing before our eyes from a young, naive girl who wanted to see more of the world to a fearless, loyal and risk taking leader.  I am loving her journey as she realizes that the world is much more complicated than she believed and sometimes you don’t know who to trust but you have to put faith in the ones you do as you try to save the world around you.

Is there romance in this book?  Just a bit but for me, I could care less.  This is Cyrene’s journey and it is amazing.  Her journey would be enough for me but to make this book even better, KA Linde provides a secondary cast of characters you can’t get enough of and secondary plots that have you wanting answers that you know she is going to make you wait for.  The next book can’t come soon enough just so we see where she takes Cyrene and the whole gang.

Pick these up and enjoy being lost in a new world.

PS.  The covers are beyond beautiful and some of my favorite ever!

Excerpt

© Lexi Ryan, 2017
“You know, once you were my friend,” I say. “And maybe that’s what I miss most about us. Maybe instead of judging me for my decisions, you could try being my friend again.”
He puts his glass down on the table, his eyes locking on mine before he slowly stalks toward me.
I lift my chin, refusing to back down, because dammit, I shouldn’t have to apologize for wanting Mason’s friendship. Is that so terrible?
But my defiant stance doesn’t faze him and he keeps coming, one step at a time, until he’s finally up against that bubble he prefers to keep between us. He takes another step and he’s inside it, but still not nearly as close as I want him. He takes another, and if I had the courage, I could reach out and touch him. Another step and he’s so close that he has to bend his head down to maintain eye contact. So close that if I lift onto my toes, I could brush my lips against his.
I almost do, if only because fighting with him makes me feel as if there’s something broken in me, and I want it to be over. I miss the soft stroke of his lips against mine. I miss the sound of his sweet murmurs as he unbuttoned my pants and slid my underwear off my hips. I miss the sex, but more than that, I miss the way he’d hold me after. He held me in a way no one else had ever bothered to. Not even Nic. Mason would pull me against him, my back to his chest, and he’d snuggle against me until I could feel the warmth of his breath against my bare shoulder.
I want all of that again, and what breaks my heart the most is if I’d known when I took that deal—if I could have seen into the future and gotten a glimpse of exactly what I was giving up—I still would have done it. I did what I had to do.
Mason’s eyes drop to my mouth. “I don’t want to be your friend, Bailey.”
“Yeah,” I whisper. “You’re making that really clear. All or nothing, am I right?”
His jaw hardens, and I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but he moves even closer. My back’s against the sliding glass door, and his body presses into mine. He shifts until his thigh is between my legs, and then he lifts a hand to my hair, sliding his thumb up my neck until he’s cupping my jaw. I want to melt because I’ve missed this so damn much. I’ve missed him so damn much.
“I’ve never wanted to be your friend,” he says, shaking his head. And it’s a blow to the heart I’m not sure I’m strong enough to endure. When I told him we could be lovers but nothing more, we were friends…best friends. Then he moved down here and shut me out.
“I’m sorry my friendship was such a burden.” Fuck, even my sarcasm sounds weak, but this whole conversation has me vulnerable.
“It wasn’t a burden. It was a daily reminder of what I couldn’t have. I thought that if I quit fucking you it wouldn’t hurt so much that you refused to be mine.” His thumb traces my bottom lip, and I tremble. “I thought if I could get the memory of your taste out of my head that maybe I’d be okay with being your buddy.” He sneers the word, his face twisting in disgust, but when the sneer falls away, it leaves raw need in its wake. “But I was wrong. I don’t want to be your friend, because that means you’re only giving me part of yourself, and I am the spoiled bastard you say I am. What was your word? Privileged?”
He dips his head down and turns his face to the side, sweeping the tip of his nose over the tip of mine. “I don’t want your friendship unless it comes with your body. And I don’t want your body unless it comes with your heart.” He dips a little farther and brushes his lips so softly against mine that I almost wonder if I’m imagining it. Maybe he isn’t touching me at all. Maybe the sensation is nothing more than air passing between our mouths.
He’s chipping at the walls I keep erected around my heart. And what happens when they’re gone? What happens when he sees me for who I really am?
“You say you want to be my friend,” he says, “but friends don’t lie to each other. They don’t hide their pasts.” His hand falls from my hair. I brace myself for his retreat, but he doesn’t back away. Instead, he finds the hem of my dress and slides up my thigh, then between my legs until he reaches my cotton panties. “Is this it, then? Is this all you want from me?”
His knuckles skim across my center, and I should stop him. Fuck. I should stop him. I know what he’s trying to do, what he’s trying to say, and how I’ll feel when this is over. But all I can think is how I feel right now. How it finally feels to have him this close—his heat, his touch.
All I can think is that if the rest of my life is going to be some sucky, lonely series of if-onlys and what-ifs, dragging from one day to the next, I just want this moment for as long as it can last. Maybe I’ll wrap it up and hold on to it. Keep it for later when I can untuck it and examine the heat of his breath against my neck or the gentle graze of his fingertips along the lace edge of my panties.
He nips at my ear with his teeth, and I moan. His breath has gone shallow, and I can feel the tension building in him—that push and pull of wanting and knowing you shouldn’t want. It’s easy for me to recognize, because I’ve lived in that limbo for almost four years.

MY REVIEW

Drunk on You is the 4th release in the Hope Town series where we get to enjoy the kiddos of our favorite Corps Security guys.  Drunk on You centers on Shane and Nikki who are the best friends of Nate and Emberlyn from When I’m With You.  Shane is co-owner of the Dirty with Nate and an ex-stripper (fantastic dancer) and Nikki is a second grade teacher in an exclusive private school.

These two have been secretly crushing on each other for awhile but while they were in other relationships therefore these two couldn’t try each other out.  Unfortunately, both of their relationships were beyond toxic and detrimental to both of them mentally.  Nikki decides one night at Dirty while she full of tasty drinks and enjoying Shane’s show to make Shane perfectly aware of how attracted she is to him.  Funny enough they turn it into a friends with benefits relationship to get rid of their exes.

But as we all know, “fake” relationships always morph into more and Nikki falls for Shane but knows he has major trust issues and doesn’t want another relationship.  He believes no woman can handle his job and that isn’t going to change.  I loved that Nikki refused to back down and fought for what she wanted.  Shane is a total alpha and really knows how to care for a woman even if he said he dint’ want more.  This was a solid addition to the New Hope series and I can’t wait for the next installment.

Book Review: Royally Endowed

Logan St. James is a smoldering, sexy beast. Sure, he can be a little broody at times—but Ellie Hammond’s willing to overlook that. Because, have you seen him??

Sexy. As. Hell.

And Ellie’s perky enough for both of them.

For years, she’s had a crush on the intense, protective royal security guard—but she doesn’t think he ever saw her, not really.

To Logan, Ellie was just part of the job—a relative of the royal family he’d sworn to protect. Now, at 22 years old and fresh out of college, she’s determined to put aside her X-rated dreams of pat-downs and pillow talk, and find a real life happily ever after.

The Queen of Wessco encourages Ellie to follow in her sister’s footsteps and settle down with a prince of her own. Or a duke, a marquis…a viscount would also do nicely.

But in the pursuit of a fairy tale ending, Ellie learns that the sweetest crushes can be the hardest to let go.
***
Logan St. James grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, in a family on the wrong side of the law. But these days, he covers his tattoos and scars with a respectable suit. He’s handsome, loyal, brave, skilled with his hands and…other body parts.

Any woman would be proud to bring him home to her family.

But there’s only one woman he wants.

For years he’s watched over her, protected her, held her hair back when she was sick, taught her how to throw a punch, and spot a liar.

He dreams of her. Would lay down his life for her.

But beautiful Ellie Hammond’s off-limits.

Everybody knows the bodyguard rules: Never lose focus, never let them out of your sight, and never, ever fall in love.

EXCERPT

Ellie

But then the mood shifts, as if the air becomes thicker, weighted, more . . . sultry.

Because slowly, Logan sinks down to one knee in front of me—looking in my eyes the whole time. In this position, I could touch his shoulders, comb my fingers through his thick, dark hair. He’s the perfect height for me to bend down and kiss his mouth—the perfect height for him to kiss me back . . . in a lot of places.

My breath hitches. And I wonder he feels it too.

There’s a sound of tearing Velcro, and Logan takes something off his ankle—a holster, with a small silver knife, about three inches long.

“Keep this on you all the time,” he says seriously. “Just in case. If you wear a skirt, the strap will fit around your thigh.”

And I almost laugh. Most girls get a ring from a guy on his knees. I get a murder weapon. But still, it makes me feel safe . . . watched over. Like I’m something precious that deserves to be protected.

I take the knife from him, testing the surprisingly solid, heavy weight of it in my hand. I press my index finger to the tip.

Logan grabs my wrist tightly. “Careful. It’s sharp.”

There’s a small, painless nick, a tiny bead of blood, so I put my finger in my mouth, sucking.

And Logan’s watching me again.

Watching my mouth.

His chest seems to rise just a little faster, and his throat ripples when he swallows. He bends his head, curves his strong back, and then I feel his hands on my ankle, securing the strap. His touch is warm and self-assured. It’s the way he always moves—confident and experienced. Logan knows his body and he knows how to use it, in every way possible.

I almost moan. The sound is in the back of my throat, but I keep it trapped. I never knew the ankle was an erogenous zone, but it sure as hell is now. A hot pulse of pleasure streaks from Logan’s fingers on my bare skin, up my thigh, between my legs.

And I throb there, growing swollen and heavy as he keeps his hands on me.

Can he tell? Does he know? He’s so aware of everything, always so attuned, I wonder if he can sense my arousal . . . feel it in the air that clings between us.

MY REVIEW

Royally Endowed is the third book in Emma Chase’s Royally series.  They are all standalone that are interconnect and you don’t necessary have to read the others but I would to really enjoy all the characters and storylines.  The entire series takes place in present day but with a fictional country thrown in the mix.

This is hands down my favorite book of this series.  I’m guessing because I found Logan and Ellie much more relatable. These two didn’t have the easiest upbringing and I found them more honest, real and raw then the other couples.  You can clearly tell in the other books that Logan and Ellie have an attraction to each other but aren’t acting on it.  You ask yourself again and again, Why not?  Royally Endowed answers this question and does it with a beautiful build up.  Logan and Ellie’s story takes place over many years and really shows you how well these two know each other and are beyond meant to be together.

Logan didn’t have an easy childhood and he signed up for the military two years before he should have been allowed.  However, his hard work and dedication led him to become one of the king’s most trusted bodyguards.  He is assigned to protect the new princess’s sister in America and Logan quickly finds an attraction to Ellie but she is just a senior in high school and he is just a bodyguard.  But Ellie never sees Logan as just a bodyguard, she actually craves his company and friendship.  As the years roll on, Logan continues to be her protector.  When these two can’t manage to stay away from each other anymore, fireworks go off and they risk everything for each other.

Favorite quote from Royally Endowed:

I would die for her. Kill for her, live for her. The vow echoes through me with every beat of my heart. She is the most important person in my life. She has been from the beginning, and she always will be. There will never be another.
I don’t know if I’ll be any fucking good at love. I’m not quite sure how it’s done. But for her, I’ll learn.  And I’ll do my damnedest to get it right.

Everything about this relationship seemed real and I think it was the pacing of the book that sold it right along with the honesty of these character’s feelings and emotions.  The tension between the two over the years made for easy page turns.  This story is definitely a slow burn and you literally can’t get enough.  It was delayed gratification at its finest.

I have loved Emma Chase’s stories since Tangled and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Royally series.  Logan and Ellie are a must read and if you want a love story with a slow burn pick it up today.

Cheater’s Regret by Rachel Van Dyken
Release Date: May 23rd

Genre: Contemporary Romance

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken returns with a smoking-hot story about the satisfaction of plotting revenge on your ex—until he turns your world upside down again.

Austin Rogers’s dreams of domestic bliss involved watching Netflix and eating hot dogs with the love of her life. But then he cheated on her. And dumped her—as if the whole thing was her fault. To maintain her pride and restore her sanity, she decides to get revenge. It feels immensely satisfying to plot her ex’s downfall—but so does kissing him.

Thatch Holloway, a plastic surgeon straight out of residency, knows he ruined the best thing that ever happened to him. But not all cheaters are created equal. He got himself into this messed-up situation—true—but he has his reasons for what happened, and he’d do it all again to protect Austin.

He’s not over her. And she’s not over him.

Austin wants closure, but since Thatch refuses to give it to her, she takes matters into her own hands. She needs to write a human-interest piece for her MBA, so she demands the full plastic-surgery experience. Sparks fly as they’re forced to work together. But Thatch isn’t afraid to play dirty in return. And he’s still hiding something—something that has the power to destroy not only Austin but their second chance at finding forever…

Excerpt:

“You want to do this right now?” He was still whispering as he slowly extended his large perfect surgeon’s hands out to the spider, and suddenly, I realized how this would end.

The spider would bite him.

Thatch’s bite would get infected.

And he wouldn’t be able to do his job.

Or pay off his student loans.

Leaving him in debt.

On the street.

Naked.

Dead.

Thatch was going to die.

“Wait!” I slowly lowered my body to the floor. Fear pounded in my ears as I held out my hands and Charlie lumbered onto my palms. It tickled. It would be nice if I weren’t so terrified of spiders.

Shaking, I walked over to the bucket and gently set him inside, this time, right side up so Thatch could transport him later. Just as I pulled my hands away, something sharp dug into my skin.

“Mother fu—”

Thatch grabbed me just before I collapsed against the floor, hands shaking and pain searing through my right thumb.

Before I knew what was happening, Thatch was carrying me over to the couch. Soft pillows met my back as he grabbed my thumb and held it close to his face.

“Am I going to die?” I whimpered. “Because the Discovery Channel [PS1] said tarantula bites feel like bee stings—they’re liars from the pit of hell!”

Thatch narrowed his eyes at the puffy red mark and then slowly dropped my hand to my side. “You’ll live.”

“Well, that’s encouraging. Don’t I at least get a sticker? A sucker? For saving your life?”

“You?” He chuckled and joined me on the couch. “Saved my life by getting bit by a tarantula?”

“Keep up!” Talking was at least distracting me from the throbbing pain. At least it had dulled a bit, though the fact that I had spider venom in my hand made me cringe. “If it bit you, you wouldn’t be able to do your job.”

He seemed thoughtful. “You mean I’d finally get a vacation where I’m allowed to sleep for longer than three hours?”

“Well, when you put it that way,” I grumbled, and tried to cross my arm, then hissed as pain exploded down my hand.

He grabbed it again. “At least the venom is weak, it’s really just the puncture wound from the spider’s fangs that causes the swelling.”

“Well, that’s disappointing on so many levels. I save your life and I don’t even get to turn into Spider-Man.”

“Tough luck, maybe next time.” He winked.

It was nice.

Sitting with him on the couch.

My legs on his lap.

My eyes focused on his mouth.

Abort! Abort!

I quickly looked away but not fast enough—he caught me staring where I shouldn’t have been staring, and I felt like a complete loser for still lusting after him the way I was.

What was it about Thatch?

Other than everything?

He was brilliant. Hardworking. Gorgeous. And he fought spiders on behalf of a girl he’d dumped.

Damn it.

“This leads nowhere,” he said in a hollow voice. “You understand that, right?”

It was like he’d just handed me the world’s happiest balloon and then popped it with a giant needle.

I was utterly defeated and deflated.

Even though I knew going into this there was no hope of us getting back together, I’d officially turned into that sad, pathetic clinger.

I’d always made fun of “those girls.”

And now “that girl” stared back at me in my own stupid mirror.

I let out a long sigh and nodded slowly. “This is strictly business, Thatch. You know how important this class is to me, how important getting my MBA is to me.”

He looked away, his jaw clenched. “Parents still MIA for the most part?”

I nodded.

“And the reelection, I imagine your dad wants you to join his mayoral campaign again?”

A sick feeling grew in the pit of my stomach.

To my parents, I was a trophy. Something shiny and pretty they could trot out to gain votes from families who appreciated their having taken time out of their busy lives to sire a child.

Granted, I knew my parents loved me.

They just loved me in their own way—the only way they knew how.

“I have to graduate,” I stressed again. “The job market’s fierce out there, and an MBA will help with that. The sooner I graduate, the sooner I can start my own life away from all of this.” I lifted my hands into the air.

This just happened to be a mansion.

A huge mansion.

With three interconnected swimming pools.

A tennis court.

Two movie rooms.

And a bowling alley.

I think I’d prefer anything but this. If I could choose to live in a dump with my parents and we’d be a family or I could have a mansion and scarcely see them.

I’d choose the dump every time.

“I’ll do my best to help you.” He lifted my legs off his lap. “But first, we ride.”

I blushed. I couldn’t help it.

“You can’t do that anymore,” he whispered, his blue eyes piercing. “You can’t blush when I say things like that.”

“Sorry.”

He muttered a curse and walked away. I could have sworn he adjusted himself near the door, but I was too busy hiding behind the couch to fully commit to ogling him.

“Where’s your bike?” he called over his shoulder before turning around.

“In the garage. It’s kind of dark now, though, let’s ride tomorrow after work.” I totally said it without stuttering or blushing.

“Fine.” He looked exhausted.

“Don’t forget the spider.” I pointed at the bucket. “And don’t let it loose in nature. We can’t have that bastard procreating with another, smaller spider and creating zombie spider babies that take over the world.”

He just stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

And then shook his head as a smile played across his face. “You’re entertaining, I’ll give you that.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you.”

“It was meant to be one.”

We froze, both of us smiling at each other.

“Sleep,” I whispered. “You’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”

“Yup.” He gripped the bucket in one hand; the muscles in his forearm flexed. “Take some ibuprofen and ice the spider bite. If you feel any muscle weakness or tightness in your chest, let me know and I’ll prescribe you something.”

“Ah, the power of the pen.”

He rolled his eyes and waved with his free hand. “See you tomorrow morning at eight, Austin.” He hesitated in the doorway. “Be sure to wear something work-appropriate.”

“Oh, so you want me to wear a bike uniform?”

He flipped me off and quietly shut the door against my laughter.

My Review

So I didn’t read the first book in this series….which honestly is shocking consider I have read everything by Rachel so after Cheater’s Regret, I will be picking up Cheater very soon. I’m not a huge fan of cheating storylines but this is more a story of a man correcting a mistake and knowing and accepting that he screwed up even if he thought it was for all the right reasons.

Austin wants revenge on Thatch for ruining their relationship and it is fun to watch her get back at him. Some may call it childish but honestly, she just had her heart broken and she is trying to cope with it the best she can. Thatch catches on quickly and he also realizes he made a horrible mistake and wants her back. Watching these two dance around each other made me laugh out loud at times. Sometimes, I wanted to hit both of them up side of the head and scream, “You too need each other!”

Cheater’s Regret was an enjoyable second chance romance and Austin and Thatch’s chemistry and witty banter made the pages fly by. I look forward to going back and reading Cheater, the first book in the series.CheatersRegret-AN

Excerpt

It’s impossible

not to smile that he remembered my drink of choice. It’s also hopeless to

pretend that the boyish grin he’s flipping me doesn’t melt away some of the ice

around my heart.

Still, I

don’t want to play nice.

“I already

had coffee today. But thank you,” I say politely.

“No

offense, but you are kind of irritable this morning. Maybe you could use

another shot of caffeine.”

“You think

I’m irritable now? Keep it up.”

“You never

were a morning person,” he laughs. “Some things never change.”

“And some

things do,” I point out, giving him a look. “Seriously, why are you here?”

“I have

business with Violet. Remember?”

“That’s

bullshit anyway, but she’s not here. You’ll have to come back later.”

“Is that an

invitation?” he laughs.

“Did it

sound like one?” My arms cross over my chest and I’m aware it makes my boobs

look bigger. As his eyes drop and catch the top of my cleavage, his gaze burns

a trail on the ascent back up to my eyes.

Satisfaction

paints a smug look on my face and desire burns in the apex of my thighs. As

discreetly as possible, I clench my legs together to quell a bit of the ache

that’s beginning to throb under his observation.

When our

gazes meet, his is crackling. He lifts a single brow. “I damn sure hope that’s

an offer to come. If it’s not, we have a problem on our hands.”

“No, you have a problem on your hands,” I

say, shrugging. “It has nothing to do with me.”

“It could.”

 MY REVIEW

I have been patiently waiting for my time with Ford since the beginning of the Landry series. Adriana Locke didn’t disappoint at all. Ford is the Landry for me. He seems the most down to earth, grounded and real. A life of privilege is never something Ford wanted and growing up in it was hard for him. He didn’t know exactly where he fit into the Landry dynasty and he wasn’t certain if he should at all. He wanted something more and he decided to enlist in the military. The only problem is he left the love of his life at home: Ellie Pagan.

Now it is ten years later and Ellie is back in Savannah and after a chance encounter, Ford knows exactly what he wants. Ellie. Even if she doesn’t want him. He is a man on a mission and he wants Ellie’s heart.

Ellie has never truly gotten over Ford and although she has built a life to be proud of…it is missing one thing….someone to share it with. So when Ford pops back in, Ellie has a hard time keeping her wits about her. She doesn’t want the pain of another broken heart but Ford isn’t willing to stop until he has her again.

If you haven’t read the Landry series, go now….purchase them all and enjoy a family saga that makes your heart swoon and laugh out loud. The Landry family shouldn’t be missed. You will enjoy every page and Ford and Swear are the perfect ending to the Landry men.

Also, I told Addy that Ford would be loved by all…..I was right!

Pucked Off, an all-new emotional and sexy STANDALONE from Helena Hunting is LIVE!!

Pucked Off by Helena Hunting
Genre: Contemporary Romance

businessman working on laptop in black suit

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance.”

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

Excerpt:

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.

I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”

MY REVIEW

Sometimes you patiently wait for a character’s story and the anticipation almost kills you.  You build up the possible story in your mind to the point that the author may not be able to fulfill your wants and needs.  I was worried…just a bit when I started Lance’s story in Pucked Off.  I love this entire series with its screwball comedy and hot hockey couples but what we have seen of Lance led me to believe that his story would require a lot more emotion and angst.  The little nuggets that Helena gave us of Lance made you think he was not only broken but maybe absolutely impossible to repair.  As a reader, you visualize what possible woman could heal Lance and Helen gave us the perfect heroine: Poppy.

These two lived up to every bit of hype I created in mind, read about in our groups and Helena provided in excerpts and teasers.  I couldn’t get enough.  Lance was just as broken as I imagined and I just wanted to reach through the pages and hug him.  This man has no idea what real love looks like.  He is a tortured soul with a terrible past and can’t seem to break the cycle.  He and Poppy have a history that he can’t remember and their relationship starts out a bit rocky.  I don’t want to ruin any part of this story for a potential reader but I will tell you it is gut wrenching to read and you just want Lance to truly find some happiness, safety and most importantly, you want him to understand and embrace real love.  Poppy is the right person for the job.

Lance Romero and his story will not leave my mind or my heart for a long time to come.  I love that Helena Hunting wasn’t afraid to give us a little angst and torture in an otherwise laugh out loud series.  She is a talented writer and I look forward to what she has in store for us next.

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Blurb

Mallory Sims is late for her first day of work.

After spilling her tea, she discovers she has no gas in her car. Add that her arm keeps sticking to her dress from syrup left on the console of her car, flustered feels like an understatement.

Then she sees her new boss.

Graham Landry is the epitome of NSFW in his custom-fit suit, black-rimmed glasses, and a look so stern her libido doesn’t stand a chance. Being flustered is just the start of her problems.

Her punctuality is only the start of his. With a pink slip in hand, he’s been waiting on his new secretary to show up only to let her go. Then she rushes in with her doe eyes and rambling excuses, smelling like bacon and lavender. The termination paper falls to the side as she falls in his arms.

This is a disaster in the making. Not because of his pinpoint exactness or her free spirit, but because when they’re together, the sparks that fly threaten to burn the whole place down.

Excerpt

We both know we aren’t just talking about a moved stapler or a mishmash of files. As that really sets in, the air around us gets heavier. Hotter. Hazardous.“Those things always lead to dangerous situations,” he says, his eyes trained on me.

I shift in my seat, the throb between my legs growing stronger by the second. “People do it every day and survive.”

“They may survive, but don’t things get messy?”

“Only if they do it right.”

His chair flies backwards and he’s to his feet and next to me before I know what’s happening. He doesn’t ask that I stand, but he doesn’t have to. It’s implied and my body reacts accordingly to his silent command.

We stand face-to-face, our breathing ragged. Our chests heave with the anticipation, the possibility, of what might come next.

“You are, quite possibly, the most dangerous of them all,” he says, his voice rough.

“Why is that?” I breathe.

“There’s no plan for you.”

“But you’ve already penciled me in, haven’t you, Graham?” I ask, finding the courage to play this little game with him. Being strictly professional is incredibly hard, and this is way too easy.

I can flirt with the best of them in a bar or on a college campus. But here, with him, it’s a game all its own. A level I had no idea I’d ever be a contender in. Maybe I’m not, but I’m going to play the hell out of it while I’m here … even though if I keep it up, I might not be here for long.

“What do you want, Mallory?”

“I want to do all the things you ask of me and do them better than you ever expected they could be done.”

A rumble emits from his throat as his eyes darken. My knees go weak and I grab the table with my left hand to ensure I don’t fall.

He licks his lips and flips his gaze to my mouth. I think I whimper as I lift my chin, waiting to see what he does next. My entire body is on fire for this man, my heart thumping so hard I’m sure he can hear it.

He moves so my back is pressed against the table, our food long forgotten. His hands are on either side of me, caging me in. Our eyes locked together, he leans in, a slow smirk spreading across his gorgeous face.

“Excuse me, Mr. Landry. Ford is here to see you,” Raza chirps through the line.

We exhale simultaneously, a giggle escaping with mine. There’s nothing funny about this, but the energy has to come out in some way.

“Mr. Landry?” she asks again.

“I’ll be right out. Thank you, Raza.”

“Oh, you’re so welcome, sir.” The line clicks off and Graham marches across the room and punches a button. The light on top indicates he’s not to be disturbed.

I busy myself with cleaning up our lunch, and before he’s at my side again, I have everything bundled up.

“Thanks for lunch,” I say like nothing just happened.

“Mallory …” He runs his hand through his hair, leaving one lock sticking up. Knowing what that will look like if we walk out together, I reach up, hesitating for a split second, before smoothing it out.

His hair is silky against my fingers. He jumps when I touch him at first, but doesn’t back away. “What are you doing?”

“Nothing went on in here. I refuse for it to look like something did. That’s the way rumors get spread, Mr. Landry.”

“Mallory, I …”

I get a final look at his face, reach up and straighten his tie as his eyes go wide, then turn towards the door. “I’ll send Ford in.”

“Mallory!”

“Yeah?” I turn to see him over my shoulder. He’s standing by the table, his hands in his pockets looking frazzled. When he doesn’t respond, I place my hand on the knob. “I’ll have that file back to you before I leave today. Thanks again for lunch.”

I walk out before I can change my mind.

My Review
There is just something about these Landry boys and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into Graham Landry.  He didn’t disappoint at all.  Over the last two books of the series, we have noticed that Graham seems to be the natural born leader of the family.  The most dependable of the lot and also the most conservative.  He doesn’t seem to have any personal relationships outside of his family and work seems to be his life.
In walks our girl, Mallory and Graham is quickly falling all over himself.  Mallory wants to stand on her own two feet after a past relationship that left her a bit unsure of herself and questioning all of her life decisions.  She takes a job as Graham’s assistant and after their first meeting, you knew these two were going to be pulled together.  Graham is a routine driven guy and Mallory throws a major kink in his cogs.  It is hilarious to see it play out between them.  Watching a man that is usually so in control, fall all over himself is a nice change.  Graham can’t stay away from Mallory and Mallory is afraid of being burned again.  She needs to control her own life but with Graham around she seems to be losing control again.
The truly best part of this story is how much these two seem to understand each other.  Mallory quickly realizes that Graham needs to do more things for himself and really spend some time just being relaxed and carefree.  Graham realizes that Mallory needs to be independent and doesn’t crowd her.  He gives her space but also supports her ambitions and dreams.  Graham is everything that Mallory didn’t have in the past.  Mallory is everything that Graham wants in a partner not only in business but in life.
Adriana Locke nailed this story and she makes me fall deeper in love with the Landry Family.  I can’t wait to see what is in store for Ford and his sisters.  This is a series I don’t want to end.
