Out of Line Super Fan Day

OOTFan_day4-1

I was super excited to be selected as one of Jen McLaughlin’s Super Fans for this week leading up to the release of Out of Mind.  If you haven’t read her Out of Line New Adult Series, pick them up now.  I received the ARC of Out of Mind and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book.  It releases April 29th!

My review for Out of Line:

Out of Mind is the 3rd and final installment in the Out of Line trilogy.  I often find that the ending of trilogies can be a bit disappointing but Jen finishes this trilogy with an absolutely heartwarming HEA.  I won’t say it is an issue road for our couple but Carrie and Finn navigate quite a difficult road in this book.  If you haven’t read the first two books, definitely read Out of Line and Out of Time first.

In Out of Mind, Finn comes home to Carrie but he is the only soldier that survives a horrible explosion in his platoon.  He is both mentally and physically damaged.  He and Carrie both know he is suffering from PTSD and neither knows what to do to help him through it.  PTSD is not dealt with lightly and it was refreshing that a romance novel didn’t “pretty up” an extremely ugly and dangerous issue for our vets.  Jen McLaughlin doesn’t make it easy for Finn and Carrie to overcome Finn’s PTSD and there are chapters that are gut wrenching and hard to read.  PTSD can destroy a person’s life and relationships and Finn and Carrie really suffer in this book from it.  The months that Finn and Carrie are separated seemed honest, realistic, and brutal.  Writing these chapters must have been difficult for Jen but this is what makes her shine as an author.

In the end, Carrie and Finn work through their issues and end up with a fantastic HEA.  It was a bit crushing for the series to end but Out of Mind really ended the series on  an extreme high note.  The storyline was strong and touching.  I finished this book in one reading.  I couldn’t put it down.  Jen McLaughlin never fails to give us a steamy romance but she was really exceptional in Out of Mind. Jen, I can’t wait for our next New Adult Series!

Check out my review for Out of Time.  This is the second book in the series!

Here is a Deleted Scene from Out Of Time- Part Two!  A little bonus for you for my Super Fan Day!

I also reviewed Out of Line for Cocktails and Books.  This is the book that started it all!

When I Surrender by Kendall Ryan

When I Surrender (When I Break, #2)When I Surrender by Kendall Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the series and I absolutely loved both books. When I Break introduces you to Knox and McKenna but in When I Surrender, we really dive into exactly who these two are. Ms. Ryan left us hanging at the end of When I Break so she couldn’t get When I Surrender out for me quick enough.

I adore Knox. Just adore him. He clearly is a sex addict and has a thing for sex and alcohol combined together. Since the loss of his parents he has had to put his three younger brothers needs before his own. Knox seems to understand what triggers his addiction and he is desperately working on it for McKenna. McKenna makes him want to be better person. He doesn’t believe he can love anyone but he is willing to give as much as he has to McKenna.

McKenna is the most selfless character I have ever read. She continues to blame herself for her parent’s death. This book goes into this and it seems McKenna seems to find some peace and realizes she has been unnecessarily torching herself a bit. She struggles with her feelings toward Knox but finally tells him she loves him with no response back.

I absolutely love the scenes where she, Knox’s brothers, and Knox are all together. They all seem happy and work at their best when they are all together. It seems they all feel holes in each other’s lives.

McKenna’s friend and roommate is a giant pain in this book. I just can’t like him although he has McKenna’s best interests at heart. When he tells Knox that McKenna is a virgin, I wanted to choke him. It wasn’t for him to share. I do love that McKenna was not phased and handled it gracefully with Knox. This was one of my favorite sequences in the book.

I couldn’t believe the ending. Seriously, killed me. I pray there is a good explanation for where Knox was at the end of the book. Hurry up, Kendall Ryan. We are waiting and not patiently.

The King is Here!

The King (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #12)The King by J.R. Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

To be honest, I was so hyped up over this book that when I started reading it, I was a tad disappointed. It started really slow but after 100 or so pages, it picked up. I wanted tons of Wrath and Beth and you only got bits and pieces in the beginning. Once the big fight between the two took place, the story was fantastic. I feel that the Warden really showcased what an actual marriage looks like. It can be ugly at times, unfair, cruel but in the end when two people really love each other, they work through all of their issues. The dialogue between Wrath and Beth during these scenes was on point and really made you feel for each of them.

I loved the many scenes where Wrath really gets what the kingship means to him. He clearly didn’t realize how much it meant to him until he lost it. Beth, being his shellan, already knew how much it meant and fights for the kingship even when he doesn’t want to. She is a strong heroine and even when the answer requires personal sacrifice, she willingly gives it. We also read a ton of flashbacks dealing with the mating and life of Wrath’s parents. I really enjoyed seeing the differences between the old ways and the new ways.

Besides, Wrath and Beth, my favorite story was Assail and Sola’s. It broke my heart! They clearly love each other but can’t make it work because of the extreme differences in their lifestyles. This is all most laughable considering Sola was a thief before she decide to turn a new leaf. I was so frustrated with her. Assail wants Sola, loves her and states he will keep his business as far from her as possible. She doesn’t think it will work and leaves. Crushing. Next book, they better end up together!!!

Trez and Selena’s story line I enjoyed as well. Lot of other readers were not so fond of it. Trez is a bad boy, a misunderstood bad boy. He is a Shadow who is promised to the Queen of the s’Hisbe tribe but he wants no part of that. He wants Selena which he knows is a bad idea. He can’t stay away from her and she seems to want him too. Once Trez reveals his past to Selena, it looks like they may never happen. I tend to think Selena will be back once she has digested all of the information that was thrown at her.

Layla and Xcor’s storyline was my least favorite. It confused me. I actually thought it was good to see a softer side of Xcor and maybe understand him better. Layla, I just wanted to slap. She was all over the place. She is attracted to him but knows he is behind the assassination attempt and the overthrow of the King and wants him to walk away from his plan. She offers her body to him in exchange for him leaving the King alone. I am on the fence with this couple. I am hoping the next book will get me back in their court. I did enjoy the trouble between Throe and Xcor. I believe Throe is going to be a larger storyline in the future.

There were a few new characters introduced. Saxton’s dad, Thym, was a real peach. I hope he meets an untimely death in the near future. I love Saxton still and hope he gets his HEA soon. I loved s’Ex, the s’Hisbe Queen’s executioner. We should be seeing more of him since he cut a deal with Trez. Finally, we met Abalone, who is Wrath’s new cleric and seems to be an upstanding citizen. It is nice to see someone admit to being pressured into a bad decision and admitting it. I also loved hearing Abalone’s family’s back story with Wrath’s parents. The Warden does a good job of creating multiple generations of characters to love and enjoy.

Favorite scene: Lassiter in an Elvis Costume
Most Heartbreaking: Fight between Wrath and Beth
Most Promising HEA: Assail and Sola

I am pained that I have to wait an entire year for another book in the BDB series!

Excerpt:
Nixon
I checked the time on my cell and leaned against the wall. The desert heat was not in any way helping my already-tense mood and irritated disposition. A guy walked by, flicking his cigarette into the dirt. Note to self: you know you’re tense as hell when you’re halfway tempted to grab said cigarette and suck the nicotine dry from the remains.
And I didn’t even smoke.
Shhhit.
My head hurt, my muscles were sore, and Trace was pissed. I closed my eyes and leaned back against the building.
“Hey there.” A flirty voice interrupted my self-inflicted torture session. I opened one eye, then two. A blond-haired girl in six-inch heels and something I can only assume at one point use to be a shirt, hanging over her shoulder, walked into my personal space. Her shirt-dress thing barely met her thighs.
“Yes?” I kept my sunglasses on. If I took them off and glared, she’d probably run screaming down the street, and I wasn’t into scaring females… at least not in that way. I knew I looked downright pissed as hell.
“Just thought you looked lonely.” She lifted her shoulder and offered a teasing smile. Did that really work on other guys?
“You thought wrong,” I said simply. “I’m holding the wall up like Samson.”
“Samson?” She looked around as if waiting for another man to appear.
“From the Bible,” I clarified.
“The what?”
“Gotta love Vegas,” I muttered under my breath. “Look, I don’t want any.”
“Any what?” She ran a manicured nail down my chest, biting down on her lip at the same time. I could only imagine her point was to get me to stare at her lips, but all I felt was irritation. Damn Chase and Mil. I just wanted to go to bed, but I needed to talk with him before tomorrow.
“Sex.” My voice clipped. “I. Don’t. Want. Any.”
“But” She twirled a piece of blond- hair in her fingers.
“I’m gay.”
“Right.” She snorted.
“I’m into men.”
“Oh really?” She closed the distance between us. Just as I was ready to seriously put my hands on her and push, I felt an arm wrap around my shoulder.
“Hey there, hot stuff.” Tex said in a low voice as his hand grabbed my ass, cupping it with a little too much enthusiasm. “You ready?”
I ground my teeth together and forced a smile. “Yup.”
“Oh…” The girl stepped back. “Um, sorry, you guys, uh, enjoy your night.” She pushed past Tex so fast I was afraid she was going to teeter off her heels and get hit by a taxi.
“Tex.” I seethed.
“Hmm?” He took off his sunglasses and tilted his head as the girl hurried away.
“You can take your hand off my ass now.”
“Why? Afraid you like it too much?”
I pushed against him.
“Just embrace your feelings!” He shouted, earning the attention of a family walking by with their two little kids.
I grabbed him by the front of his shirt and threw him few feet away from me, trying my damnedest not to smile.
“Admit it. You keep me around for comic relief.” Tex nodded with a smirk.
“I admit nothing.” I lost the war against smiling and started laughing. “But I do keep your ass away from Campisi, so remember that next time you start yelling about me being your lover.”
“True.” Tex grinned. “Oh, and P.S., don’t knock it till you try it.”
“P.S.,” I repeated in the same voice. “Still pissed at you for screwing over my sister.”
“Yeah well.” Tex sobered. “It’s for the best.”
“Breaking her heart and bringing in whores is what’s best for her?”
Tex lifted his hands into the air. “Look, I didn’t say my methods were sound or that they were intelligent, just let us deal with it, okay? We’re big kids.”
“Kids.” I snorted. “That about sums it up.”
A town car pulled up next to the curb. Chase got out and then held out his hand to Mil. My eyes narrowed; she looked different. Happier.
Her mom had just died, and she’d survived a bombing.
And she was smiling like the Taliban had just declared world peace.
Chase gripped her so tight that I saw the white of his knuckles.
I tilted my head, still watching them when Tex said. “Dude, you get laid?”
“Tex,” I snapped. “Go get something for their luggage.”
“But
“Go.”
Tex flipped me off, but ended up jogging over to the main entrance while I inspected both Mil and Chase. “I’m not saying this to be an ass
“Here we go.” Mil crossed her arms.
Chase waited.
I licked my lips and tried to appear indifferent. “But if you guys start screwing each other now, I may have to shoot one or both of you. It’s not the time to play house, got it?”
“Play house,” Chase repeated in a deadpan voice as he dipped his free hand into his back pocket, most likely clenching a pair of brass knuckles.
“I know it’s your honeymoon,” I continued. “But this [P1] little scenario you’ve got going on with the whole hot and cold is going to have to wait until everyone’s safe. So Chase, keep it in your pants for once in your life, and Mil, stop trying to seduce the poor kid, alright? It’s like dangling a damn fry in front of a seagull.”
“Who’s a fry?” Tex asked, pulling the luggage cart with him.
“Mil.”
“Are we eating dinner or something? Because I have to admit,” Tex leaned against the cart, “I’m freaking starving.” He eyed Chase and Mil. “Then again, I’m sure you both are too. All those extracurricular really take it out of ya.”
Chase took off his sunglasses, his face twisting in irritation and annoyance, no smile. Nothing. He was pissed.
“Chase,” I said slowly. “You know I’m right. You’re the best I have. I need your focus to be on The Family. Your family. Then you can screw all you want, okay?”
Mil looked like she wanted to punch me in the face. Chase took a step forward, but she stopped him.
“Good talk.” I exhaled. “Chase, I’ll see you down in the bar in a half-hour, okay? We have business to discuss. Mil, you can go find the girls. They’re having dinner out by the pool.”
Nobody moved.
After a few seconds of tense silence where I was pretty sure Chase was trying to convince himself not to strangle me to death, Tex cleared his throat and pointed to the luggage. “You guys need help, then?”
“Yeah,” Chase croaked. “Thanks.”
We loaded them up and sent them on their way.
“Tell me,” Tex asked once we were walking back toward the bar. “Is your only goal to see how far you can push Chase before he kills you in your sleep?”

Book Review: The Proposition Part 3 by HM Ward….I’m still reeling….

10151205_724588084246953_846430087_nI don’t get it.  I don’t understand it.  But HM Ward gets me every time.  She sucks me in and leaves me wanting more.  I couldn’t get enough of Prop 3 and was turning the pages at the end hoping that it wouldn’t end.  HM Ward is a brilliant story teller and some how has turned serials into an art form.

Prop 3 starts right where Prop 2 left off with Hallie and Maggie dealing with the murder that was witnessed and things taking a huge turn for Hallie.  I believe this is pivotal point in Hallie’s evolution as a character.  It hardens her and strengthens her at the same time.  There is no going back from where she has gone and she knows it.  What will be the ramifications?

Bryan calls in his proposition and there is some explosive sex scenes between the two.  We witness Brian’s softer side with Hallie toward the end of the book.  We also get a bit more information on Brian’s condition and his pill popping.  We don’t find out much but you realize that there is something truly wrong  with Bryan and he isn’t even sharing the information with his cousin Jon.

What you leave Part 3 with is a whole lot of anguish for these two characters.  Will we finally figure out their backstory? Will they finally be honest with each other?  And will their current actions and agendas bring them together or destroy them?

Once again, I am left hanging until Prop 4 comes out next month!

Another 5 star by HM Ward.  I received an ARC for an honest review.

Book Review: Craving Him by Kendall Ryan

18775224

Craving Him is a continuation of Ben Shaw and Emmy Clarke’s story from Kendall Ryan’s Working It. I absolutely loved Working It! The book took my breath away in parts and the storyline moved along quickly. Craving Him gave Ben and Emmy the HEA we were all wanting.

Ben is a supermodel that every woman fantasizes about but he only has eyes for Emmy, his sweet, curvy Southern Belle. Problem is that at the end of Working It, Ben and Emmy are going to piece back together their broken relationship. I don’t want to ruin Working It but the curveball from that book has ramifications seen through 3/4 of Craving Him. I would argue that you need to read Working It first.

Emmy and Ben run through the gamut of relationship problems in this book and it is fantastic to see Ben willing to fight for what he wants and needs….Emmy. Emmy has a hard time dealing with how different their lifestyles are and is not sure she can handle all the baggage that comes with Ben. She opens herself time and time again but ends up being hurt.

Without her best friend and roommate, Ellie, Emmy never would have survived Craving It. Quite honestly, Ellie was my favorite character in this book. She delivered some awesome one liners.

“Oh boy, this douche canoe again….”
“Vodka? Chocolate? A blowtorch to fry his balls? What do you need?”

I can’t wait to see what fireworks happens between Ellie and Bray in the next book. Kendall Ryan never disappoints. Every book she writes, I enjoy.

But growing up on her family’s ranch left her with a love of horses that draws her to the opportunity. How bad can babysitting a bunch of strung out celebrities be?

And she sure didn’t expect to feel the overwhelming attraction that pulls her to the man who has more issues than she can count on both hands. Like the hotel rooms and tour buses he’s famous for trashing, the havoc he could wreak on Stella’s heart would be irreparable.

About FOUR SECONDS TO LOSE:

Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine year old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.

Twenty-two-year old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting anddancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her doesn’t need to complicate her life with romance.

Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.
